June 06, 2013

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – One is a senior, the other just beginning her college career, but together two exemplary students in the School of Arts, Media, & Communication at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi have been awarded a combined total of $7,500 in competitive scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Jacquelyn Vaught, a freshman working on a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a teacher certification, was selected to receive $6,000 from the Clara Freshour Nelson Music Scholarship. Students nominated for this scholarship are evaluated based on academics and performance ability.

Vaught is active in the Corpus Christi Area Youth Orchestra, the top youth orchestral ensemble sponsored by the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra.  She is also a member of the Texas A&M- Corpus Christi Symphonic Winds and Flute Ensemble. One of her professors says not only is she truly devoted to her musical studies, she also received a 4.0 during her first semester at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Heather Beltz, a senior working on a Bachelor of Arts in Music, was selected to receive a $1,500 national undergraduate scholarship given by Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies. As a member of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi chapter, Beltz was nominated by her fellow members of Sigma Alpha Iota for the award. Beltz is currently principal flute with Symphonic Winds, and also performs with the Flute Ensemble. Her professors say she is an outstanding piccolo player, and has performed in various roles within the flute section of the University Orchestra.
