CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Dr. Guang Zeng, Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, is the lead author for the article titled “Integrating U.S. Federal Efforts to Address the Multifaceted Problems of Children: A Historical Perspective on National Education and Child Mental Health Policies,” which is in press with the School Mental Health Journal and was published online in December 2012.

In the article, Zeng examined the U.S. federal response to the crisis in child mental health in relation to its efforts to address the crisis in public education, while highlighting the interconnectedness of youth violence, substance abuse, and academic problems. She concluded that federal efforts in improving children’s mental health and academic performance should be integrated to achieve optimal outcomes. From a national policy perspective, Zeng recommended establishing a broader accountability system for both academic performance and social-emotional development and further, a greater system of care for child mental health with schools as the focal point.
