CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A handful of engineering and computer science students from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi gathered at Lake Findley near Alice, Texas, on November 9 to launch and test communication and tracking of a large helium balloon.

The students involved in the project were: Keith Burlette, Michael Casavecchia, Ricky Casaveccia, and Chris Fraughton. The balloon, which contained a Go-Pro Camera, and a GPS unit linked to a tiny tracker, was to have been tracked by computer, in real time, revealing its GPS coordinates. However, due to extreme winds, the balloon became difficult to handle and exploded. The remains were repaired and released approximate to the path the balloon was supposed to follow had the project been a success.
