Five Marine Science Students Serving Internships with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Five undergraduate students at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi have been awarded scholarships for summer internships with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).

The scholarships totaling $32,000 are funded by a $26,000 donation by the TPWD and a $6,000 gift from the Mr. Big Trout Fishing Tournament which promotes fish conservation in the Coastal Bend. The recipients, all undergraduate students studying marine science, are serving their internships working with coastal fisheries biologists in bay systems along the Texas Coast. Scholarship recipients and the areas where they are working are:

  • Zaida Hager- TPWD Marine Lab in Rockport
  • Nathan Huysman- TPWD Marine Lab in Rockport
  • Elliot Brielle- Lower Laguna Madre
  • Nicole Poulson- TPWD Marine Lab in Rockport
  • Michael Birchfield- Upper Laguna Madre

This is the 10th year that the scholarships have been awarded by the TPWD and the fifth year that the Mr. Big Trout Fishing Tournament has helped fund the summer internships. Dr. David McKee, professor in the University’s College of Science and Engineering, initiated the program in 2003 and works with the TPWD in the selection process.
