Oil Spill Prevention and Response Students Practice Skills On Anniversary of BP Deepwater Horizon Disaster

May 08, 2012

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Students in the "Oil Spill Prevention and Response" class at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi conducted an oil spill response booming on April 20 to protect the Columbus Ship "Nina" from a potential oil spill at the Lawrence Street "T" Head in the Corpus Christi Marina.

The exercise held on the second anniversary of the BP Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico simulated a protective-action booming strategy in the event of an oil spill. Boats and equipment will be staged and deployed from the Cooper’s Alley boat ramp. Students then practiced small boat handling, construction of anchor systems, and the deployment of oil spill boom from a trailer with anchor systems.

Students in the class spend a semester receiving hands-on training in oil spill response techniques and learn what OSHA safety topics are applicable to oil spill incidents. Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion from the National Spill Control School certifying them as qualified emergency responders.
