Welcome Center Will Greet Visitors ‘Deep in the Heart of Campus’

April 05, 2012

The Island University is building its first Student Welcome Center in the heart of the campus; the Mary and Jeff Bell Library.

“The first impression that prospective or returning students will see is a welcoming, personal environment with the latest technology,” said University President Flavius Killebrew. “It’s a great example of where we are going throughout the entire campus.”

Dr. Killebrew led the creation of the Welcome Center which is expected to open this summer. The Center is one of many efforts across the University to meet the needs of a quickly-growing student population.  It will include a state-of-the-art classroom to help prospective students move seamlessly through the application and financial aid process.

“What’s really exciting is the services for the new students,” says Margaret Dechant, associate vice president For Enrollment Management.

Campus tours will begin and end at the Welcome Center which includes five offices and four computer stations for filling out college admission information and financial aid applications, including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. In addition, visitors will be able to use touch screens to access information and interactive campus maps. There will also be a 32-seat media room equipped with projectors and televisions for viewing campus information.

“Our Island Ambassadors are thrilled to have a place to sit down with potential students and returning students and have a conversation that is personal about the big choice that is starting college,” says Dechant.
