Students Approve Referendum to Increase Fees for University Center Expansion

March 26, 2012

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Students at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi have approved an increase in student fees that will fund expansion of the University Center, the campus building in which many services offered by the University are located.

By a vote of 340 to179, students approved a fee hike from $45 to $100 per semester beginning in fall 2012. For each summer session, fees will increase from $22.50 to $50. The vote, which was held both online and in the University Center on March 21-22, followed a feasibility study conducted in 2009 by a team of University students.

“We’d like to thank our students and the greater community for acknowledging what this project will mean for future generations of South Texans,” said University President Flavius Killebrew. “While most students will pay for this expansion, many will graduate before they can use the expanded facility. This legacy is a testament to their faith in the future of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.”

Although the building has yet to be designed and specific sustainable strategies have not yet been established, key areas of focus will include increased day-lighting, increased efficiency of the exterior envelope, green roofs, highly efficient HVAC systems, low flow plumbing fixtures, high efficiency light fixtures, and increased exterior shading of glass and glazing.

The University Center was originally constructed for a campus of around 7,000 students. Today, the student population exceeds 10,000 with enrollment expected to soon reach more than 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Among the services located in the University Center are the University Bookstore, Commons Market, the Campus Post Office, Wells Fargo Bank, Campus Copies, and administrative offices, home to Student Activities and student organizations.
