The Island University

A Brief Campus History

A premiere educational system is central to a thriving, vibrant community. Through the perseverance and vision of a dedicated faculty, staff, community and student body, A&M-Corpus Christi has grown to fill a unique and important role in meeting the educational needs which will strengthen the region in the future.

The University of Corpus Christi (UCC) was created in 1947 in affiliation with the Southern Baptist Convention of Texas. After Hurricane Celia severely damaged the campus in 1970, civic leaders sought local and state support to convert UCC to a state-supported institution with an expanded curriculum. In 1971, the Texas Legislature authorized the Texas A&I University System to establish a university teaching juniors, seniors and graduate students, and on September 4, 1973 Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi opened its doors to 969 students. In 1977 the University’s name was changed to Corpus Christi State University.

Corpus Christi State joined The Texas A&M University System in 1989, was renamed Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 1993, and became a four-year comprehensive university in 1994. Between 1991 and the present, the University has added eleven bachelor’s degrees, eleven master’s degrees and four doctoral programs. By 2004, enrollment grew to approximately 8,200 students.
