| Oso Bay Biennial XV at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to Feature Internationally Recognized Artists |
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Department of Art and the University Galleries will hold its Oso Bay Biennial XV symposium featuring workshops, lectures, demonstrations and exhibitions by internationally recognized artists Patricia Olynyk, Claire Todd and Louis Katz from Wednesday, Jan. 30, through Friday, Feb. 1. The events are free and open to the public.
The Oso Bay Biennial was established 30 years ago to bring artists to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi who work in a variety of disciplines, both traditional and non-traditional. This year’s symposium, which will feature two receptions for the featured artists, will focus on new and emerging styles being used in contemporary art. Oso Bay Biennial XV events will include the following:
Wednesday, Jan. 30
Beginning at 10 a.m. in the Warren Theatre, Center for the Arts, Dr. Elizabeth Reese will discuss Oso Bay Biennial XV, followed by art talks from artists John Medina (11-11:50 a.m.), Claire Todd (noon-12:50 p.m.), Louis Katz (1-2 p.m.) and Patricia Olynyk (2:15-3:15 p.m.).
Thursday, Jan. 31
Beginning at 10 a.m. in the Center for the Arts studios, demonstrations will be presented by Claire Todd (10-11:50 a.m.), Patricia Olynyk (1-3:15 p.m.) and Louis Katz (3:30-5 p.m.).
From 5-7 p.m., a reception will be held for the Oso Bay Biennial XV exhibition “In Disciplinary and Emerging Media” by Patricia Olynyk and Claire Todd at the Weil Gallery in the Center for the Arts. The exhibit will be on display through Friday, March 14.
Friday, Feb. 1
A panel presentation with artists Louis Katz, John Medina, Patricia Olynyk, Claire Todd and moderator/curator Dr. Elizabeth Reese will be held from 10-10:50 a.m. in the Warren Theatre, Center for the Arts. A gallery walk with Olynyk and Todd will be held from 11-11:50 a.m. in the Weil Gallery, Center for the Arts.
From 6-8 p.m., a reception for the Oso Bay Biennial XV exhibition “Not Intended for Functional Use” by Louis Katz will be held at the Islander Art Gallery, located at 4024 Weber Road in the Hamlin Center. The exhibition will also include the works of John Medina. The exhibits will be on display through Saturday, March 1.
Patricia Olynyk is director of the Graduate School of Art at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.
Claire Todd is an international artist who lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and a visiting lecturer at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford in England. Todd will also complete a one-month residency at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi working with students and contributing to the exhibition with new work during its run.
Louis Katz has been professor of ceramics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi since 1994. The artists have exhibited their work in numerous venues both nationally and internationally.
John Medina received his bachelor of fine arts in 2006 from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. His installations and videos have been featured in numerous exhibitions around Texas.
