Nursing students will be in the Mary and Jeff Bell Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, offering free health screenings of Glucose levels, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure for all students and employees. There will be additional screening opportunities Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m. in the University Center. “The Corpus Christi area faces a diabetes epidemic that has tremendous costs to our community both in human and business terms,” said Dr. Mary Jane Hamilton, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. “According to the American Diabetes Association, one out of three children born since 2000 in the Corpus Christi area will develop diabetes. That means that a huge segment of future employees could be unable to fully and healthfully enter the workforce, thus placing the Corpus Christi area at a competitive disadvantage to other communities competing for jobs and investment.” |
