Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Fine Arts Student Wins Top Prize at Art Center of Corpus Christi’s ‘Dimension’ Exhibition

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Brian Przybyla, a master of fine arts sculpture major and graduate assistant at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, received the Citgo Best of Show Award at the 35th annual Dimension exhibition at the Art Center of Corpus Christi.

The “Dimension XXXV” exhibit will be on display through Saturday, Dec. 1. Przybyla, a Chicago native who will graduate in May 2009, won a $1,000 award for his sculpture “Hot Salvation II.”

The sculpture was created from cast aluminum and a base of welded steel. Przybyla chose to pour the metal into a wood mold because when the metal, which reaches 1,500 a temperature of degrees, hits the wood, it reacts to the moisture and basically explodes.

“The benefit to pouring metal in this fashion is that you wind up with a very lacy texture, and also the smoke from the wood causes the metal to turn several different colors,” Przybyla explained.
