CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Dr. Jack Cassidy, associate dean and professor of curriculum and instruction in the College of Education at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, has been awarded the A.B. Herr Award by the College Reading Association (CRA). Founded in 1958, the College Reading Association is the nation’s leading organization for teachers interested in reading. The award, which has been presented annually since 1972, recognizes a professional educator who has made outstanding contributions to the field of reading. The winner is given an engraved plaque and a monetary award of $500. Cassidy, a former CRA president, has been involved with more than 100 national publications including nationally refereed journal articles, books and book chapters. He has also written, edited or consulted on more than a dozen series of texts and materials for children and youth. Cassidy is a past recipient of the International Reading Association’s Special Service Award, which recognizes admirable service to the organization. The International Reading Association with a worldwide membership of more than 80,000 educators is the world’s foremost organization for educators interested in the teaching of reading. Cassidy is a former president of the International Reading Association. In addition to hundreds of presentations in the United States, Cassidy has also presented papers in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Croatia, France, Hungary, Ireland, New Zealand, Philippines, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Cassidy came to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 1998 and served as the chief architect of the College of Education’s doctorate in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in reading. That program, now in its fourth year, has more than 40 students. Previously, Cassidy served as interim chair of the Department of Educational Administration and Research during which time the department modified its doctorate in educational leadership to include a focus on higher education administration. He has a Ph.D. in educational psychology with an emphasis in reading from Temple University in Philadelphia. |
