CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –Elementary and middle school students from Corpus Christi are sharing personal perspectives with a camera of what they consider interesting in their community.
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and the Boys & Girls Club of Corpus Christi Greenwood Unit have collaborated on ArtMoves: A Photography Exhibition Featuring Student Work from the Boys & Girls Club of Corpus Christi Greenwood Unit.
Subjects sparking curiosity for students ages 8 to 13 include pets, homes of loved ones, beach pebbles and kids at play.
The exhibit, which includes 60 photographs, opens Saturday, May 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. with a reception and Community Day at A&M-Corpus Christi’s Center for the Arts Weil Gallery.
Children’s art activities will be available and student photographers will be present. The photographs, many accompanied by short stories and poetry, will be displayed through May 26 and include local students who participated in regional competition.
“I think one of the most important aspects of the program is getting the kids into the University setting and not having it be intimidating for them,” said Jane Chesson, a fine arts graduate student and volunteer who teaches photography at the Boys & Girls Club of Corpus Christi Greenwood Unit. “Having their work in an art gallery is a cool thing for them to be a part of and it makes them feel like it’s really something they can achieve.”
Chesson, former art director at the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club in Delaware, said the arts provide children with a positive alternative that will keep them out of trouble and a coping tool when needed.
Last year, Chesson organized a mobile murals program and exhibition.
The photographs are part of the ImageMakers National Photography Project sponsored by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and funded by the Circuit City Foundation to encourage girls and boys to learn and practice photography, expressing themselves in creative and innovative ways.
Weil Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 361.825.3672.
