CORPUS CHRISTI – Fifteen summer camp participants will dissect computer equipment and learn to create animated movies during a hands-on workshop Tuesday, June 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Science and Technology, Room 214.

Today, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and the WorkSource of the Coastal Bend launched their first “Youth in Technology” summer camp for students ages 17-21, which runs through Friday, July 6, on the University campus. The projects will be led by Phyllis Tedford, computer science instructor at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

Participants will learn basic computer science while creating animated movies and simple video games. They will be able to control 3-D objects and characters in a virtual world through the “Alice” interactive software program.

“The Department of Labor predicts that by 2012, there will be approximately 90,000 computer science positions that will go unfilled,” Tedford said. “Three out of four of the fastest growing fields that require a bachelor’s degree in the next 10 years are related to computer science.”
