Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to Host Annual Regional National Ocean Sciences Bowl Competition

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – More than 15 teams comprised of approximately 85 students from area high schools will take part in the 9th annual Ocean Sciences Bowl at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the University Center.

The Ocean Sciences Bowl is a national high school competition sponsored by the Consortium for Oceanic Research and Education (CORE), a Washington, D.C. based association of U.S. oceanographic research institutions, universities, laboratories, and aquaria that represents the nucleus of U.S. research and education about the ocean. The competition is designed to interest students in the ocean sciences as a college major and potential career.

Corpus Christi area schools scheduled to compete are King High School, Gregory-Portland High School and Incarnate Word Academy. Other scheduled competitors include, Cumby High School, Dalhart High School, John Jay Science Academy and Madison High School of San Antonio, McAllen High School, Sabinal High School and Star Charter High School of Austin.

The round-robin, double-elimination competition will consist of multiple-choice and short-answer questions within the scientific and technical disciplines used to study the oceans. The winning team will go on to compete against 24 other regional champions in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl Saturday, April 28 through Monday, April 30 in Stony Brook, N.Y.

Sponsors for this year’s regional competition are Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, the Center for Coastal Studies, the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, the Coastal Bays and Estuaries Program, the Gulf of Mexico Foundation and the Texas State Aquarium.
