CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Approximately 30 students from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Surfing 101 class will take their final exam by riding the waves of Mustang Island about 100 yards north of Horace Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas on Tuesday, May 1 beginning at 4 p.m. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is the only four-year institution of higher learning in the state to offer surfing for credit through its Kinesiology program. The class is designed to teach students the skills to safely enjoy surfing through a combination of classroom lectures and a beach program. In addition to learning how to properly use equipment, students are taught surfing history and environmental issues. The class is taught by Phil “Puddy” Albright, an experienced competitive surfer and registered sports counselor. Student’s final grades are based upon a combination of the surfing final and a written examination of material covered in the classroom. Albright and his students will be available for interviews. |
