CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Council of Teachers of Mathematics at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will hold a Family Math Night at Gregory-Portland Intermediate School Thursday, April 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

Family Math Night engages students and their families in exciting hands-on investigations of mathematical activities. Each activity station is set up with materials for families to engage in activities that involve problem solving, logic and spatial reasoning. Pre-service teachers from A&M-Corpus Christi provide assistance as needed.

Each family receives an activity bag with the materials and directions to duplicate and extend the activity at home.

“These events provide experiences for pre-service teachers to interact with parents before they are teaching in their own classrooms,” said Dr. Elaine Young, assistant professor of mathematics. “Many times the first contact our new teachers have with parents is at their first parent-teacher conference. These types of after-school enrichment activities provide a way for them to meet and talk to parents before they are in an authoritative role.”
