Mayor to Recognize Milestone in Islander Athletics History with Proclamation of “Southland Conference Day” in Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi Mayor Henry Garrett will join Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi President/CEO Flavius Killebrew, Southland Conference Commissioner Tom Burnett, and Islander Director of Athletics Brian Teter in proclaiming Thursday, Sept. 7 “Southland Conference Day” during a 3 p.m. ceremony in the University Center, Legacy Hall.

Dr. Killebrew will also present the University’s coveted “Silver Wave” award to distance runner Shadrack Songok who last spring became the first Islander athlete to earn NCAA All-America honors.

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi officially became a member of the Southland Conference on July 1. The conference, which consists of 12 member institutions in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I sports with conference champions earning automatic qualification to NCAA championships in football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, men's golf, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's tennis, and women's soccer.
