Think Pink at A&M-Corpus Christi’s Breast Cancer Observance Event grows to include a dog walk to raise money for breast cancer The Women’s Center for Education and Service at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will launch the third annual “Paint the Island Pink” Thursday, Oct. 5 from noon to 2 p.m. in the University Center, Lonestar Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public. “Paint the Island Pink” is an educational event to promote cancer resources, awareness of the disease, and the importance of early detection. A panel of speakers will present and answer questions concerning the disease from noon to 1 p.m. and answer questions from 1 to1:30 p.m. The panel includes breast cancer survivors’ Cinda LeBus, director of education for Planned Parenthood, and Jane Bourquard Ibanez, trainer and motivational speaker. Dr. Gerard Voorhees, radiation oncologist with the Corpus Christi Cancer Center will answer questions. An expo showcasing the treatment, care and support options available will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. The "Paint the Island Pink" campaign continues with the “Paws for a Cause” dog walk Friday, Oct. 6 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. For a $5 donation, the public can walk a dog on the University’s hike-and-bike trail. All proceeds will benefit “First Friday,” a non-profit program dedicated to underwriting free mammograms for South Texas women. For people who want to participate but don’t have a dog, PALS Animal Shelter will provide people-friendly dogs ready to be walked. The dogs, and several PALS puppies, will be available for adoption. All participating dogs must be vaccinated, have rabies tags, be people and pet-friendly, and be on a leash. Participants will have an opportunity to win prizes for their dogs.
