CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Department of Theatre at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will present “Into the Woods,” a musical tribute to the Brothers Grimm, Thursday, Nov. 9 through Sunday, Nov. 19 in the Warren Theatre in the Center for the Arts.

Into The Woods graphic“Into the Woods,” was written by James Lapine with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the winner of a record seven Tony awards whose works have set the standard for modern American musical theatre for more than four decades. “Into the Woods” begins as a lively irreverent fantasy in the style of “The Princess Bride.” However, it soon becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.

The musical, which ran for two years on Broadway in the late 1980s, was inspired by Bruno Bettelheim’s “The Uses of Enchantment,” and features an assortment of uncensored versions of the 18th century fairy tales by brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. In 1988, a year when the Tony awards were dominated by “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Into the Woods” won the award for Best Musical Score.

“The play combines humor, tragedy and complicated themes in a production that is wonderfully theatrical,” said director Kelly Russell. “And of course, the show contains some of the best songs ever composed by Steven Sondheim.”

In the first act, a baker and his wife must retrieve items from “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Cinderella,” “Rapunzel,” and “Jack the Giant Killer” in order to lift a curse which prevents them from having children. In the second act, events turn serious as characters learn about community responsibilities, the penalties of greed and the consequences of their actions. In addition to the characters made famous by the Brothers Grimm, the play includes a giantess who terrorizes the land after her husband is killed when Jack chops down the beanstalk.
