Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Student Newspaper Receives Seven Awards at Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Conference

“Island Waves,” the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi student newspaper, received seven awards at the recent Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) Conference in San Antonio.

“Island Waves” staffers brought home one second-place and four third-place awards as well as two honorable mentions.

In the General Column category, Matthew Tedrow placed second for “Censorship and Free Speech,” an opinion piece critical of the University’s policy of limiting free speech on campus to the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Plaza.

Co-Editors Erica Rangel and Sara Slaughter took third place in the Editorial competition for “Islanders Should Move Mainland,” which argued that student parking should be moved off campus to make room for more buildings on campus.
In addition, Marcus Benavides and Candy Rudolf received third-place awards for Illustration and Ad Design, respectively. Racquel Gilford earned an honorable mention in Sports Features and Garrett Wieland was awarded an honorable mention in Critical Review.

The “Island Waves” student newspaper has been published on campus since February 1993 and currently has a staff of 14 self-taught students. The paper is distributed weekly on Thursdays during the fall and spring semesters with an additional summer orientation issue published for incoming students.
