Traffic Being Rerouted During Repairs to West Island Blvd. Entrance at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi

Traffic at the West Island Blvd. (first) entrance to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is being diverted up to Surf Lane for the removal of the existing asphalt surface and replacement with concrete pavement. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by Friday, Aug. 11.

During the renovation, two-way traffic will be re-routed to the current exit lanes. A new access drive will also be constructed into the Natural Resources Center parking lot allowing cross traffic at Surf Lane. A construction and traffic flow map is available at

According to Ron Smith, director of the University’s Physical Plant, the replacement of the deteriorating asphalt surface with more durable concrete is possible because of the current competitive pricing of the two materials. The renovation, which is limited to the northbound lane, is being funded by a $300,000 grant from the state. The southbound lane will be resurfaced when more funds become available.

Until the renovation is completed, the West Island Drive kiosk will be closed. Parking permits may be obtained at the University Police Department, located in the Physical Plant on Oso Lane.
