Young Musicians to learn individual and group skills at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islander Band Camp
Friday night concert in Performing Arts Center to highlight week of activities
The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Band will hold its 4th annual Islander Band Camp from Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 14 in the Center for the Arts.
The camp is open to all middle and high school musicians with at least one year of musical experience. Classes will consist of group lessons sectionals, full ensemble rehearsals and rudimental music theory, and afternoon activities such as games and recitals.
Prior to the camp, students will audition for band placement between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday July 8. Students should bring music of their choice for the audition. Campers will be divided into woodwind, brass and percussion groups in which musicians will work on individual instrumental techniques.
“The Islander Band Camp will give students a terrific opportunity to learn from the University’s superb faculty-artists,” said Camp Director Dr. Shawn Smith. The students will not only have the chance to rehearse and perform great music, they will also have the opportunity to improve their individual instrumental skills.”
Camp hours will be Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until noon. On Friday evening participants will perform a free public concert at 5 p.m. in the University’s Performing Arts Center. The concert will be professionally recorded and a CD may be purchased at the performance site.
Tuition for the camp is $125, which includes on campus lunches Monday through Thursday. After Friday June 23, tuition will increase to $140. Refunds will be granted through Monday, July 3, minus a $30 non-refundable fee.
