Award-winning Teacher and Author Dr. Robert Wooster to Deliver Commencement Address at Summer 2006 Graduation
Dr. Robert Wooster, a distinguished history professor and award-winning teacher and author will deliver the commencement address at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s summer ceremony. He is only the second professor to be chosen for the honor under a new tradition established by University President Flavius Killebrew where outstanding students, faculty and members of the community will deliver the keynote address on a rotating basis.
Wooster has been a professor of history at the University since 1986. A native of Beaumont, Texas, Wooster received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in History from Lamar University. In 1985 he received his doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin.
Wooster has written seven books, including Soldiers, Sutlers, and Settlers: Garrison Life on the Texas Frontier; The Military and United States Indian Policy, 1865-1903; Nelson A. Miles and the Twilight of the Frontier Army; and Frontier Crossroads: Fort Davis and the American West.
He has served as the Civilian Deputy Director of the U. S. Military Academy/ROTC Military History Workshop (West Point), the Price Daniel, Sr., Scholar in Residence, the Texas State Historical Association’s Visiting Scholar, and an editorial advisory board member for several scholarly journals and university presses. His invited lectures and addresses include those for the Yale Conference on the Military and the History of the American West, the Institute for Texas Studies, the American Historical Association Conference on Teaching, and the Combat Studies Institute (Fort Leavenworth). He was elected president of the Texas State Historical Association, the state’s oldest academic society, in 2005.
Wooster teaches courses on Texas history, military history, the Civil War, and U.S. history at the University. The student body voted him “Favorite Professor of the Year 1991-1992,” and he was one of 10 selected from 99 nominees statewide as a Piper Professor of 1998 by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation. He has twice been elected Speaker of the Faculty Senate, and was appointed chair of the Department of Humanities in 1997, a position he held until 2000.
The A&M-Corpus Christi Summer 2006 Commencement will take place on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the American Bank Center Arena. Approximately 379 students from the University’s five colleges have applied for graduation this summer.
Parking for the event at no charge includes Lot 3 for platform party and handicapped guests, Lot 5 for the general public, and Lot 6 for faculty. Other parking will cost $5.
