MTV Reality Series Star and Gay Activist Shawn Landrum to Speak to Students at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi
More than 50 students expected to participate in National Day of Silence
MTV reality television star Shane Landrum will address the challenges of being a gay male in America during at lecture on Wednesday, April 26 at noon in the University Center, Oso Room. Landrum will speak as part of the “National Day of Silence” observance at A&M-Corpus Christi.

Landrum first appeared on the MTV series "Road Rules Campus Crawl.” He also participated in four other MTV series, as well as three special episodic tapings. Since then, Landrum has become a nationally recognized minority rights activist who has spoken at more than 150 colleges and universities since August of 2002.

“Shane was asked to speak because he’s lived the life of a young homosexual male and dealt with issues pertinent to the Day of Silence,” said Student Activities Program Coordinator Michael Roman. “We’re hoping that his status as a pop icon will help raise awareness of the prejudice faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals.”

The Day of Silence observance at A&M-Corpus Christi will be held during school hours. While participants, including straight allies, will not engage in social conversation, they will speak when necessary in classroom and workplace situations.
The Day of Silence is co-sponsored locally by P.R.I.D.E. (Proudly Representing Individuality, Diversity & Equality!), the Islander Cultural Alliance and the National Coalition Building Institute. The “Day of Silence,” is a joint project of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and the United States Student Association Foundation (USSAF).
