Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Hosts Sixth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Remembering the Dream Unity March Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Islander Cultural Alliance and the African-American Cultural Society, a campus student organization, will host the sixth annual Unity March in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. in front of the University Center. Rev. Harry Williams, a minister and a member of the Corpus Christi ISD board of trustees, will deliver the keynote address at a reception immediately following the march. This years march titled, “Remembering the Dream” will proceed along down the center of campus and onto Ocean Drive, and will end at the University Center, Lonestar Ballroom. The march is intended to unite A&M-Corpus Christi students and the community in honoring the life, sacrifice, dream and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Williams, a native of Kinder, Louisiana, has been pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for 21 years. He is a Vietnam veteran, and a graduate of Del Mar College and Howard Payne University. He served as president of the board from 2003-2004. Williams has also served as president of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance. He has served on the board of directors for Leadership Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi Charter Revision Commission, Corpus Christi Civil Services Commissions, YMCA, Goodwill Industries, the National Conference for Community and Justice, and the CCISD Discipline Task Force. In 2000, Williams was named the Omega Psi Phi "Citizen of the Year" and the Delta Sigma Theta "Man of the Year" in 1989. Gavarae Jones, president of the African-American Cultural Society (AACS), has attended celebrations and parades honoring Dr. King since she was seven years old. “I look forward to the march because it acknowledges and honors the dream of Dr. King,” Jones said. “Part of the mission of AACS is to educate others about the African-American culture and the march is a good way to get people talking and asking questions.” Jones and the 25 members of the AACS want to keep the lines of communication open and are hard at work planning activities and events in recognition of Black History month in February. The Unity March is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Student Activities office at (361) 825-5855. |
