Family Day at Islander Art Gallery to Feature Artist Vincent Valdez and Former Olympic Boxer Humberto “Lefty” Barrera
Charcoal Drawings compare night in life of boxer to “Stations of the Cross”

A Family Day with artist Vincent Valdez featuring former Olympic boxer Humberto “Lefty” Barrera will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Islander Art Gallery, 4024 Weber Rd.

Valdez, who uses boxing as a metaphor for the everyday struggles of humanity in his “Stations” exhibition of 8-to-12-foot charcoal paintings, will sign invitations, discuss his art, and demonstrate his drawing techniques. Barrera, of Robstown, will talk about his experiences as a member of the 1960 United States boxing team which included Muhammad Ali, who won the light-heavyweight gold medal in Rome.
