Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Theater Department to Bring Rudyard Kipling’s Classic “The Jungle Book” to Life

Experience the enchanting world of Mowgli, a young boy adopted by wolves after being abandoned in the deep forests of India, as he learns the laws of the wild and its creatures, when the Theatre Department at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi presents “The Jungle Book” in the University’s Wilson Studio Theatre beginning Wednesday, Feb. 23.

Rudyard Kipling's “The Jungle Book” became a classic for children and adults alike following its publication in 1894 and, more than 70 years later, inspired one of Walt Disney's most successful full-length feature films. The A&M-Corpus Christi ensemble will perform an adaptation of Kipling’s vintage story by critically-acclaimed playwright Christina Calvit, who has written more than a dozen theatrical adaptations which have been performed throughout the United States.

“Calvit's theatrical adaptation brings Kipling's much-loved stories to life for the stage and captures the language, mood, and style of the original book,” said director Kelly Russell, an assistant professor of theatre at A&M-Corpus Christi.  “Presented as story-theatre told by a group of Indian villagers, the play follows the adventures of Mowgli who, with the help of characters like Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther, and Kaa the python, grows up and learns the ways of the jungle.”

“The Jungle Book” will be performed on Wednesday and Thursday, February 23-24 at 11 a.m.; Friday and Saturday, February 25-26 and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 3-5 at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, February 27 and Sunday March 6 at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are $8 for the public, $5 for faculty and staff, and $1 for students with a valid SandDollar$ card.
