“Danzamar” Statue to be Dedicated during Ceremony at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Performing Arts Center

“Danzamar,” the statue by local artist Kent Ullberg that overlooks the atrium of the new Performing Arts Center on the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, will be unveiled during a reception and dedication ceremony at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 10.

“Danzamar,” which is Spanish for sea dancer, is an 8’9” statue of a woman dancer in a flowing skirt reminiscent of a seashell which sits atop a four-foot pedestal in the atrium of the Performing Arts Center. He form and attitude are inspired by both ballet and folklorico and elements of both are apparent in the sculpture.

“Danzamar” was made possible by a $100,000 donation from the Amy Shelton McNutt Charitable Trust. The McNutt Trust commissioned the work from Ullberg to show appreciation for the University’s contribution to the community. The McNutt Charitable Trust was founded in 1983 after the death of Amy Shelton McNutt, the widow of geologist Dr. V. H. McNutt.

Following the unveiling and dedication of Danzamar by University President Flavius Killebrew, artist Kent Ullberg and Randy Cutlip, trustee of the Amy Shelton McNutt Charitable Trust, guests will enter the concert hall for the Performing Arts Center dedication program which will begin at 4 p.m. The concert will conclude with the Concert Band and University Singers performing “Spirit of Life,” a musical selection commissioned for the opening of the Performing Arts Center, written by Randol Bass with poetry by University professor Dr. Robb Jackson.
