A&M-Corpus Christi’s Women’s Center to Hold Panel Discussion on the Myths of Date Rape
84 percent of  female college students knew their assailant

The topic of date rape is not easy to talk about, but one in four girls will be raped before the age of 25. In addition 84 percent of female college students knew their assailant, but only 5 percent of college women report the rape to the police. The sexual assault of males is also on the rise with an estimated 10 percent reported in 1999.

The Women’s Center for Education and Services at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will hold a date rape discussion panel titled “ I Thought I Said No, I Thought She Said Yes” on Wednesday, Oct. 20 from noon-1 p.m. in the University Center, Oso Room 221. Panelists will discuss the myths of date rape, how it affects college students and ways to prevent it. Featured panelists include D.K. Ivy, Ph.D., Professor of Communication; Andrea Martinez, Women's Shelter Sexual Assault Intervention Coordinator; and Lisa Scheerer, Navy Sexual Assault Intervention Coordinator.

The discussion is free and open to the public. For more information, call (361) 825-2792.
