Texas A&M-University-Corpus Christi Students
and Teachers Honored with Haas Writing Awards
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi students and teachers were congratulated
for exemplary writing skills at the sixth annual Haas Writing ceremony
on Monday, May 3. The awards ceremony was funded by the Peter and Mary
Haas Endowment for the English Department.
Awards are presented in seven categories; Undergraduate Creative Writing,
Graduate Writing, 2000 Level English, 3000 Level English, Technical and
Professional Writing, 1302 Research Essay, and 1301 Essay.
“Winners get a small cash prize and a certificate,” stated Dr. Susan
Swan, an English professor for theCollege of Arts and Humanities. “The
students are judged by three people who are not in the English Department,
but are professors at the University.”
The winners of the Haas Writing Awards for 2004 are:
Undergraduate Creative Writing- First place, Bonnie Bayes with “Electricity;” and
second place Misty Lassiter with three poems entitled “About Love,” “Mending
Ama,” and “Poem on my Brother’s Birthday.” Both
were students of Dr. Robb Jackson. Third place Stacy Smith with “My
Brave New World.” Smith is a student of Dr. Vanessa Jackson.
Graduate Writing- Jennifer Bray won both first place and third place
with her works entitled “The Sound of Music: Arundhati Roy’s Authorial
Voice in the God of Small Things” and “Interlopers Who Disturb
the Peace: A Structuralist Reading of Susan Austin’s “Shadow
of a Doubt” for Dr. Janis Haswell and Dr. Elisabeth Mermann, respectively.
Yndalecio Isaac Hinojosa won second place with “Postmodern Elements
influencing the Cinema.” Hinojosa is also a student of Dr. Mermann.
2000 Level English-Dr. Haswell’s students, Kristin Lancaster with “Bridging
the Gap: An Analysis of Comparative Language” and Courtney Eads with “As
Different Cultures Collide” took home first and second place. Dr.
Sharon Talley’s student, Christopher A. Lockamy took third place
with “Dogmatist: A Generational Curse.”
3000 Level English-Bridgette Rodriguez took first place with “I’m
Just a Dreamer: Two Fathers and Why They Don’t Work.” Rodriguez
is Dr. Talley’s student. Eleanor Wilson took second and third place
with “The Ten-Minute Man” and “The Vocal Englishman.” Wilson
is a student of Dr. Haswell.
Technical and Professional Writing-Dr. Susan Loudermilk’s students
took all three places. First place went to Steve Cao and David Rjasko for
the “YMCA Website,” second place went to Jose Montemayer with “Jose’s
Audio CD Creation Tutorial Website,” and Christie Ruiz, Yvonne Escochea,
and Bonnie Bays took third with “Feral Cat Care Society Web Page.”
1302 Research Essay-First place went to Adriana Armendarez for “Proportional
Representation for a True Democracy in the United States,” second
place went to Ryan McKinnis for “Both Parents at Work: The Effects
on Their Children,” and third place went to Anna Burke for “Changing
Sexuality in the Movies.” All three were students of Robin Carstenson.
1301 Essay-First place went to Cathy Freeze’s student, Ashley Hardway
for “Causes and effects of Mad Cow Disease.” Second place
went to Candace Bagwell for “A Color-Struck Community Among African
Americans.” Bagwell
is the student of Becky Flores. Third place went to Maria Jaramillo for “Economic
Causes and Consequences of Narcotraffic.” Jaramillo is Carstenson’s
student. |
