Students Learn by Shadowing Workplace Mentors
On Monday, Feb. 2 students all across the United States, including A&M-Corpus
Christi students, will take place in “Job Shadowing 2004.” Texas
A&M University-Corpus Christi Career Services matched students with
local workplace mentors who will allow students to spend the day with
a company that employs positions of interest to the student. The event
is part of “National Groundhog Job Shadow Day,” a nationwide
initiative dedicated to giving students a unique opportunity to "shadow" a
workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job, getting
an up-close look at how the skills learned in college will be utilized
in the real world.
“We have had a great response,” said Terri Howe, career counselor. “Over
40 students are being connected with employers and companies.”
All levels of students are signing up for the program. Fields of interest
include management, counseling/psychology, elementary and middle school
education, veterinary sciences, accounting, criminal justice and healthcare.
“I believe ‘Job Shadowing Day’ will be a great eye-opener
to help students witness the real world aspect of their future career
choices,” commented Howe. “It will be an exciting and educational
experience for the student.” |
