Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Math Club
to host Chess Tournament
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Math Club will host the
1st Island University Cup Chess Tournament, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
Sat. Jan. 17. The tournament invites all levels of players from the community
including, grades kindergarten through 12, college students and adults.
The United States Chess Federation, which promotes nurturing scholastic
chess, has sanctioned the event.
A&M University-Corpus Christi Math Club students organized the event
to promote interest and advancement of chess within the university population
and community and to begin to establish the event as a tradition.
Trophies will be awarded to the top five players in each section and
medals to the following five competitors. The top five schools in each
division will also receive trophies.
“I am excited to be involved in the event,” said Dr. George Tintera,
faculty advisor of the Math Club. “We are expecting over 100 players;
it should be a challenging contest.” |
