Christi to Host Fifth Annual Regional National Ocean Sciences Bowl
Competition
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will host the fifth annual regional
Ocean Sciences Bowl on Saturday, February 28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in
the University Center.
The Ocean Sciences Bowl is a national high school competition sponsored
by the Consortium for Oceanic Research and Education (CORE), a Washington,
D.C.based association of U.S. oceanographic research institutions, universities,
laboratories, and aquaria that represents the nucleus of U.S.research
and education about the ocean.
Approximately 19 teams made up of 110 students from area high schools
will take part in the round-robin and double-elimination competition
which consists of multiple-choice and short-answer questions within the
scientific and technical disciplines used to study the oceans. Competing
schools include Columbia-Brazoria, Cumby, Gregory-Portland, Incarnate
Word Academy, James Madison,Roosevelt, Star Charter, Taft and W. B. Ray
high schools.
The winning team will move on to the national finals inCharleston, S.
C. April 23-26.
Sponsors for this year’s competition are the Texas State Aquarium,
the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program, the Gulf of Mexico Foundation,
the Center for Coastal Studies, the Harte Research Institute for Gulf
of Mexico Studies and the University.
