Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Theatre Department Presents William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

The Wilson Studio stage will be illuminated by kings, queens, fairies and magic when Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s University Theatre presents William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Feb. 27-29 and March 3-7.

The classic comedy revolves around two couples who enter the enchanted woods where the king and queen of the fairies preside. Their romantic interests are hilariously complicated by the impish character Puck who casts misdirected spells on the lovers. Bottom the weaver and the antics of his bumptious band of "rude mechanicals” are less subplot and more satirical contrivance. They stumble into the same forest to rehearse a play and while there, Bottom is transfigured by Puck’s mischievous misadventures.

The fantastical scheme is directed by Ina Jensen, College of Arts and Humanities instructor. The set, designed by Ben Philipp, is dominated by bewitching trees that climb the height of the theatre. The fairies that inhabit the trees bring the dark woods to life. Their vivid costumes blossom in the background and a dappled glow covers the stage. Mortals who stumble into the dreamy backdrop are hopelessly charmed.

“I wanted this play to evoke all the senses. It is beautiful in total and I think people are going to love it,” said Jensen. The lush set, gossamer costumes, bright music and talented cast all combine to captivate the audience, Jensen added.
