Student Support Services Graduates honored during Texas
A&M University-Corpus
Christi Academic Achievers Dinner
The 27 graduates of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Trio/Student
Support Services (SSS) program were honored recently during the annual “SSS
Academic Achievers of 2003-2004” dinner.
Student Support Services is a federally funded TRIO Program that helps
low-income Americans enter college, graduate and move on to participate
more fully in America's economic and social life. The emphasis is on
providing an environment in which students can come for assistance in
meeting their academic, personal, career, cultural awareness, and social
needs.
In her keynote address, Nelda Martinez, an A&M-Corpus Christi graduate
and President of the Holly Road Division of Stewart Title, told the graduates “Don’t
ever subscribe to the school of hard knocks. Take responsibility for
your lives… that means no blaming, no complaining, no justifying,
and no defending.”
Liz Mucheru-Wisner, a recent SSS graduate, spoke of what the program
has meant to her.
“Student Support Services has been like a great welcoming face when I
was having a bad day at school or work and needed a person to talk to
or just a smile and a hug,” said Wisner. “The staff at Student
Support Services has been a major reason why my experiences at Texas
A&M University-Corpus Christi have been so wonderful.”
