Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi College
of Science and Technology to host 16th Annual Coastal Bend Science
Fair
Kindergarten through eighth grade students to compete for top awards
The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi College of Science and Technology
will host the 16th annual Coastal Bend Science Fair from Friday, April
30 through Sunday, May 2 in the University Center and the Moody Sustainers
Field House.
The fair is the final competition for students who have competed in science
fairs in their school districts and will include kindergarten through
eighth grade students from Corpus Christiand surrounding school districts.
Exhibits will be broken down by grade with more than 800 students competing
for ribbons and medals. The overall winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship
to the University.
The students will prepare experiments relating to engineering/physical
science, earth science or life/health science utilizing the scientific
method. Each student will make an oral presentation to a panel of judges
to explain their experiment and findings.
“
The science fair is crucial in developing students’ science skills,” said
coordinator Dr. Jonda Halcomb of the University’sCollegeofScienceand
Technology. “Students gain practical and hands-on experience. It’s
very important for them to gain those skills beginning with the decision
on the experiment and ending with communicating the results of their
experimentation.”
Science and education majors from A&M-Corpus Christi and Del Mar
College will help with all aspects of the fair. Judging will be done
by scientists, engineers, faculty members, educators and college science
students.
