The R/V Falkor will be open Friday, Oct. 5, from 1-4 p.m. for public and student viewing tours at the dock of the Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz International Center. The viewing tours of the 272-foot vessel will be scheduled between the first leg of the trip Sept. 17-29, and the second leg. Oct. 8-23.
The R/V Falkor is being provided to the Harte Research Institute and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi by the Schmidt Ocean Institute free of charge for two of the first cruise legs. Harte Research Institute scientists will be studying and mapping the South Texas Banks, a series of late Pleistocene-early Holocene coral-algal bank on the continental shelf edge between Corpus Christi and Brownsville. On the second leg, they will study artificial reefs on the South Texas continental shelf, as well as continue tagging sharks, snappers, etc. They will also study the oceanography of the south Texas coast, including influences on the distribution of red tide.
