Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi announced $70,000 in commitments during the month of March to provide scholarships and resources for the new Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. IBC Bank has committed $30,000 toward the upcoming program; Frost Bank has announced a $20,000 gift; and Beecroft Construction has committed $20,000 toward the endeavor.
University President Flavius Killebrew said that establishing a mechanical engineering degree program will require unrestricted and endowed funds for expanded laboratory space, additional faculty, research opportunities, and scholarships. The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents approved the bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at its January meeting, and is awaiting final approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. With approval, classes would begin in fall 2009.
In April, the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce will begin offering new and renewing members the opportunity to make a donation to support the University's engineering programs. Dollars received will be directed to a program fund established at the University.
