Campus Announcements is a digest of University events distributed twice a week each Monday and Thursday during the fall and spring semesters. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Submit an announcement request.
Islander Women’s Basketball: The Islander women’s basketball team will kick off the season against Texas Southern University Monday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. at the American Bank Center arena. Various prizes and T-shirts will be given away. Students get in free with a valid SandDollar$ ID. Faculty and staff tickets are $6. For more information, call ext. 2255.
Army ROTC Nursing Program Information Brief: The Military Science Department will present an informational briefing about the Army ROTC Nursing Program Thursday, Nov. 20, at 1 p.m. in Bay Hall, Room 103. Capt. Jennifer Maynard, nurse counselor, will present the requirements for becoming an Army nurse through ROTC and the benefits and expectations after graduation. “Lunch Amongst the Masters:” The Art Museum of South Texas, 1902 N. Shoreline Blvd., will host a “Lunch Amongst the Masters” program Friday, Nov. 21, at noon. Guest speaker Elizabeth Schlatter, deputy director and curator of University of Richmond Museums in Richmond, Va., will present a Gallery Walk and discussion of the new Art Museum exhibit “Leaded: The Materiality and Metamorphosis of Graphite.” A buffet lunch will follow the program. The cost is $15 for members and $18 for nonmembers. The new exhibit, which features 50 works by 16 artists who utilize various forms of graphite, is on view to the public through Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009. Department of Computing Science Faculty Seminar Series: The Department of Computing Science will hold a faculty seminar series Friday, Nov. 21, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Science and Technology building, Room 106. Sidewalk Closure: The sidewalks at the southeast corner of Center for the Arts building and the vehicle turn around at that end of Wave Crest Drive will be closed for construction through Friday, Nov. 21. Bring canned goods to help support the Coastal Bend this holiday season with an annual food drive. Flour Bluff Pop Warner Junior Pee Wee Cheer will perform at half time. Various prizes and T-shirts will be given away. Tickets are buy one, get one free. Students get in free with a valid SandDollar$ ID and can pick up tickets in advance at the SandDollar$ office. Student Composition Concert: The Department of Music will present the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi/Del Mar Student Composition Concert Monday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call ext. 5523.
World Affairs Council Luncheon: Frank Gomez, strategic alliances and public affairs executive with the Educational Testing Service, will speak on “Corpus Christi in the Eye of the Perfect Storm: Education, Immigration and the Workforce” during the World Affairs Council of South Texas luncheon Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 11:30 a.m. at the Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz International Center. Tickets are $25 for members and active duty military in uniform, $32.50 for non-members, and $18 for students. Reservations must be prepaid. Seven Movie Milestones Film Series: The University Cinema will screen the film “Bonnie and Clyde (1967, 105 min.) Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Bay Hall, Room 104. Directed by Arthur Penn and starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, the film depicts the legendary outlaw couple of the 1930’s as likeable rebels in this New-Wave influenced classic of the “New American Cinema.” The screening is free and open to the public. ‘Invisible Children:’ The Omega Phi Alpha RSO Service Sorority will hold a rough-cut screening of the documentary “Invisible Children” Saturday, Nov. 22, at 4 p.m. in the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom. The film highlights three young Americans who traveled to Uganda in spring 2003 in search of a story. What they found was a tragedy where children are the weapons and the victims. The film exposes the effects of the 20-year war on children who live in fear of abduction by rebel soldiers and are forced to fight as a part of a violent army. Seven Movie Milestones Film Series: The University Cinema will close its “Seven Movie Milestone” film series with the screening of “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (2000, 103 min.) Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Bay Hall, Room 104. Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, and starring George Clooney, John Turturro, John Goodman and Holly Hunter, this funny story of prison escapees in the South parallels Homer’s Odyssey and illustrates the imaginative use of computer-generated imagery. Weight Watchers: The Department of Recreational Sports will host a new fall Weight Watchers class. The class will meet Fridays through Dec. 19, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Glasscock Fitness and Wellness Center. The cost is $168 for the 14-week program. Furgason Bravo! Series Discount Tickets: Faculty, staff and student discount tickets for this year’s Furgason Bravo! Series are on sale now at the Performing Arts Center box office. This year’s series features Islander tradition Michael Martin Murphey’s “Cowboy Christmas Concert” Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. In addition, celebrate President’s Day on Monday, Feb. 16, with Keith Brion’s New Sousa Band at 7:30 p.m. Faculty and Staff receive a $10 discount in the $30 and $20 seating areas. Student tickets are $7 in the $15 seating areas. Discounts are only available in person at the box office. You must show a valid SandDollar$ ID to receive the discount. Only four discount tickets per ID. Box office hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets sell out fast. National Literacy Coaching Summit Proposal Deadline: The deadline to submit proposals for the 2009 National Literacy Coaching Summit is Monday, Dec. 15. Proposals are refereed, and presenters will be encouraged to submit a manuscript for a refereed publication on literacy coaching. The National Literacy Coaching Summit will be held at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, April 3-4, 2009. Heart Gallery of South Texas: The “Heart Gallery of South Texas” featuring photo displays of 62 local foster children seeking permanent adoptive families will be on display through Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center, 2021 Agnes St. The exhibition, which coincides with National Adoption Month, is a collaborative project between the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Community Outreach Department. Islander Softball First Pitch Dinner: Three-time Olympian Crystl Bustos will be guest speaker at the Islander Softball First Pitch Dinner Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, from 6-8 p.m. in the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom. New University Logo Launched: The new branding marks for Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi are now available from the University’s Image Gallery. The images are in various formats for supporting the creation of presentations and materials. You can access the images at http://imagegallery.tamucc.edu. The new images have also been added to the trademarked images at Strategic Marketing Affiliates which oversees commercial usage of the marks.
