Parents' Council
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
The Parents’ Council is an annual fund drive involving non-alumni parents and grandparents of current and past students. Running from September 1-August 31 each year, the Parents' Fund is a significant part of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Annual Fund, a yearly fundraising effort designed to enhance the University's annual operating budget and to support additional student opportunity. Last year, annual giving from alumni, parents, and friends totaled over $100,000. The Parents Fund portion exceeded $50,000 toward student extracurricular activities.
How is money for the Parents’ Council raised?
The Parents’ Council raises funds through receptions held during New Student Orientations. These receptions allow parents an opportunity to spend 45 minutes with the Development Office being introduced to what the Parents’ Council does and its necessity to increase student opportunity. Secondly, 15 students, known as the Island Callers, call parents to ask for support for the Parents’ Council and updating them on what is new and exciting around campus.
Why do parents, who may already be helping to pay their student's tuition at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, give to the Parents’ Council?
There are compelling and persuasive reasons why parents contribute to the University's operating budget over and above the costs of tuition and board. When we inquired with parents as to why THEY chose to become a part of the Parents' Council, some of their reasons include:
- To increase the value of their student's degree.
- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is a state-assisted university and tuition alone does not cover the operating budget. The deficit must be made up by other sources of funding, including foundation and private gifts.
- To provide opportunities to students that would otherwise not be possible due to increasing State budget cuts.
