A History of Excellence
for the Momentum Campaign
Students at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi explore the depths of the Gulf of Mexico, perform on the finest stage in the Coastal Bend region, undertake study and research that improve lives, support the well-being of the community, and engage in partnerships with businesses. Our campus is often called the jewel of The Texas A&M University System. We are the only university in the nation located on its own island. With palm trees lining pathways throughout the 240-acre island campus, a nearby natural wetlands and a beach along the Ocean Drive address, A&M-Corpus Christi becomes a first-choice destination for many. The newly donated 140 acres from the City of Corpus Christi across the Oso Bay gives the University its mainland presence. Our attitude stays young because we are able to adapt quickly to new technologies and engage new energies.
Founded in 1947 as a private Baptist college called the University of Corpus Christi, the institution became an upper-level, public university in 1973 under the name Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi. Four years later it became part of the newly formed University System of South Texas and was renamed Corpus Christi State University. In 1989 the Texas Legislature merged the University with The Texas A&M University System and approved returning the campus to four-year status. Upon being renamed Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 1993, the university opened its doors to 500 freshmen and sophomores. Today, we are home 9,600 students engaged in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs.
Among our principles are recruiting, retaining and supporting a diverse, highly qualified student body, faculty and staff. We establish a culture of professionalism and responsibility, where we foster free and open intellectual inquiry, accomplishment and expression. Our operations promote the efficient and effective use of time, resources and technology. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi provides an active campus life that extends teaching and learning beyond the classroom.
