Saturday, May 17 – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will hold its spring 2008 commencement Saturday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the American Bank Center Arena. Commencement speakers will be A&M System Chancellor Michael D. McKinney and Elizabeth Benson-Landau, who is graduating with a bachelor of arts in sociology. Saturday, May 17 – The Islander Dance Team at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will hold tryouts for the 2008-2009 season Saturday, May 17, at 1 p.m. at the Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center, located at 2021 Agnes St. Performance routine requirements include right split, switch leap, right split leap, double pirouette, axel, toe touch and turn sequence. Dancers must bring 6-to-8 eight counts of original choreography. Scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded to all members. Registration is $25 to be paid the day of tryouts. Space is limited. Thursday, May 22 – The Department of Art and University Galleries at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will hold an opening reception for the “Y.L.A. #12 (Young Latino Artists): Embracing Chaos” exhibit Thursday, May 22, from 5-7 p.m. in the Weil Gallery located in the Center for the Arts. The exhibit includes photography, paintings, drawings and sculpture created by six young artists from across Texas. The reception is free and open to the public. Thursday, May 22, through Friday, June 20 – The Department of Art and University Galleries at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will present the “Y.L.A. #12 (Young Latino Artists): Embracing Chaos” exhibition on display from Thursday, May 22, through Friday, June 20, in the Weil Gallery located in the Center for the Arts. Monday, June 2, through Thursday, June 5 – The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi women’s basketball staff will hold a day camp for girls in grades three to 12 from Monday, June 2, through Thursday, June 5, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Moody Sustainers Field House on campus. The camp will focus on improving dribbling, passing, shooting, and defensive fundamental skills. Every camper will be placed in her age or skill level to develop personal growth. Registration is $130 for one person or $105 per person with a friend. A $50 deposit is due by Sunday, May 25. After the deadline, registration will be $140 per person. Monday, June 2, through Friday, June 6 – The Department of Music at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will hold its Islander Orchestra Camp from Monday, June 2, through Thursday, June 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts and Friday, June 6, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending with a concert at 4:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. The camp offers middle and high school students the opportunity to perform in a string orchestra, receive instrument-specific training, and be exposed to chamber music and music theory concepts that will help them be well-rounded musicians.
Auditions for skills placement will be held on the morning of the first day of camp. Students should bring audition music that demonstrates their technical and musical abilities. The camp will be run in a pro-tryout format with Islander coaches present. Registration is $75 with limited spots available. Monday, June 9, through Friday, June 13 – The Department of Music at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will hold its Islander Band Camp for middle, junior and high school students from Monday, June 9, through Thursday, June 12, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday, June 13, from 8 a.m. to noon in the Center for the Arts. An end-of-camp concert will be presented at 5 p.m. Friday, June 13, in the Performing Arts Center. Students will participate in group lessons, sectionals, full ensemble rehearsals, and basic music theory, as well as afternoon activities and recitals. The camp is open to students with at least one year experience. Auditions for skills placement will be held on the morning of the first day of camp. Students should bring audition music that best shows their skills and musicianship. Registration through Monday, June 2, is $295 for resident tuition and $200 for commuter campers, which also covers meals. After Monday, June 2, a late registration fee of $20 will be charged. Monday, June 9, through Friday, June 17 – The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Kinesiology Department and the National Youth Sports Camp Program will sponsor a multi-sport, co-ed summer camp for children ages 10-12 on campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays Monday, June 9, through Friday, June 27. Daily camp activities will include swimming, lacrosse, water polo, golf, field/floor hockey, badminton, and traditional team sports including football, basketball, soccer, kickball and softball. Other pending educational activities include horseback riding, kayaking and scuba diving.
