(right) won the prestigious Texas
Environmental Excellence Award in the Education Category presented
by Texas Governor George W. Bush. The pair were recognized
for their community-wide efforts in air pollution prevention
through a series of workshops and programs in the industrial,
business and public sectors of the city. Needham and Arnold
also coordinated youth programs, teacher environmental education
workshops and environmental programs with Girl Scouts, Boy
Scouts and Explorer Scouts. |

Furgason named "Newsmaker of the Decade"
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi President Robert R. Furgason was named "Caller-Times
Newsmaker of the Decade" by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. "This
is quite an honor," said Furgason. "This recognition has to be shared
with my family, students, faculty and staff at A&M-Corpus Christi and others
in the community who have helped build this University to what it is today. We
still have many challenges in front of us and we will continue our efforts to
improve the quality of life in South Texas." Caller-Times Managing Editor
Deborah W. Fisher said, "We were looking for someone who has had a far-reaching
impact on the community. Over the last 10 years Dr. Furgason's leadership has
had a lasting impact on the community and University. He was a natural." Furgason
was previously named "Caller-Times Newsmaker of the Year" for 1998.
Upward Bound
A&M-Corpus Christi and Del Mar College have jointly been awarded a $1 million
U.S. Department of Education grant for the implementation of the Student Center
for Academic and Learning Excellence (SCALE) Upward Bound program. A&M-Corpus
Christi is designated as the lead institution in the program, which began during
the 1999-2000 academic year. Students participating are predominately Hispanic
with a high percentage considered first generation students whose parents have
not completed a baccalaureate degree. The Upward Bound program is designed to
help strengthen academic skills of these students while motivating them to stay
in school and succeed in education beyond high school.
Beauty Spot Award
The Beautify Corpus Christi Association presented the Fourth Quarter of 1999
Beauty Spot Award to A&M-Corpus Christi. This program recognizes community
involvement in creating aesthetically pleasing areas in the city. The association
recognized and honored the efforts of the grounds maintenance department of the
University for the beautification project around the Mary and Jeff Bell Library,
including Garcia Plaza.
Coastal Bend Health Education Center
Plans for the new Coastal Bend Health Education Center (CBHEC) were announced
Jan. 31, 2000, at A&M-Corpus Christi. The CBHEC will be a joint effort of
The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, A&M-Corpus Christi,
Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Del Mar College, Coastal Bend College and
the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station and Extension Service. The Center will
have five components: Nursing, Nutrition/Dietetics, Partnership for Primary Care,
Public Health/HERO (Health Education and Rural Outreach) Program, and Communication
Disorders.
Project EARTH
Middle and high school mathematics and science teachers currently under contract
with Region II are able to participate in Project EARTH, a professional development
program. The teachers are trained on the latest teaching methods, including available
technology, to teach mathematics and science using a modeling approach.
