At the beginning of this decade, our University had the challenge--and opportunity--of a lifetime: to build a first-class comprehensive university upon the foundations of an upper division institution. Build it for the students of the 21st century. Create and mold academic programs responsive to the needs of a changing workplace. Integrate technology into the classroom. Give students expertise in the tools of today--and tomorrow. Where possible, bring the classroom to the students.

Our challenge: Build the Wave of the Future . . . Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

Through these years, we have used our "Wave of the Future" slogan as our guiding light, as an image of progress. It has come to symbolize a set of high expectations, a quest for excellence and a constant challenge for our entire University. We have created a "can do" atmosphere emphasizing creativity. In doing so we found new ways to combine and leverage limited resources, forge diverse alliances, and link theory and practice creatively and effectively. The resulting dynamic has produced a building wave of excellence, from the classroom to the boardroom, from the research lab to the arts studio.

As we developed our Island University into an Island of Opportunity, we purposely directed our energies to aid our community and region through our various instructional programs and research and service functions. This report highlights some of our Waves of Excellence. I hope it captures for you the dynamic flavor of our University.

This academic year, 1997-98, is also the 50th anniversary of our Island University. Fifty years ago far-sighted leaders of this community established our beginnings as the University of Corpus Christi; about 25 years later we became a state university. Today we celebrate our emerging academic reputation. Tomorrow we will once again take on the challenge to be the best we can be.

Facing change is perhaps the only constant in our world today. Therein lies the challenge. Constant change dictates that development of our human resources through education must be our society's highest priority if we are to maintain and improve our economic and social well-being as a state and a nation. We at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi intend to be a part of the solutions to major problems. We will answer the challenge.
