BEST Places to Work graphicUniversity Named Area's Top Place to Work
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi won first place in the large business category of the Best Places to Work in the Coastal Bend Awards sponsored by the Corpus Christi Human Resource Management Association. The winners were announced at an awards luncheon Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the Omni Bayfront Hotel.
 

Flint Hills representative with Dr. KillebrewMechanical Engineering Program Receives Pledges
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi announced $530,000 in pledges during the month of February to provide scholarships and resources for the new Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering program. Flint Hills Resources will donate $400,000 over five years for the Flint Hills Resources Fund in Mechanical Engineering. American Bank has announced a $100,000 gift for the American Bank Endowed Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering, and Darryl and Teresa Haas have committed $30,000 to create the Darryl and Teresa Haas Fund in Mechanical Engineering for student scholarships, laboratory equipment and other needs. The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents approved the bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at its January meeting, and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board could give final approval by April. The University is planning for the first classes to begin in fall 2009.

 

New Sousa Band Returns for Presidents Day
The University celebrated Presidents Day with an evening of spirited patriotic music by Keith Brion and his New Sousa Band, Monday, Feb. 16, in the Performing Arts Center. Each year, the band tours throughout the United States performing a collection of classical works, grand marches, light music and virtuoso solos and novelties by Sousa, America’s best-known composer and conductor of patriotic music.

 

Women’s Center Presents ‘Vagina Monologues’
The Women’s Center for Education and Service presented the Obie Award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues” Feb. 12-13 in the Performing Arts Center. Based on more than 200 interviews playwright Eve Ensler conducted with women about their sexual experiences, “The Vagina Monologues” has been performed on college campuses across the country. A portion of the proceeds benefited V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls.

 

Dr. Killebrew signs Memorandum of Agreement with La Universidad Autónoma de Queretaro officialsUniversity Signs Memorandum of Agreement
A Memorandum of Agreement between Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and La Universidad Autónoma de Queretaro for the exchange of faculty and students in the areas of music and the performing arts was signed by University President Flavius Killebrew and La Universidad Autónoma de Queretaro officials Monday, Feb. 2. La Universidad Autónoma de Queretaro is located in the “Cerro de las Campanas” about 120 miles northwest of Mexico City.

 

Ocean in Google Earth mapScientists Help Create New Google Feature
Scientists at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi played a vital role in the creation of “Ocean in Google Earth,” a feature of the newest version of Google Earth, that allows users to soar over the ocean bottom and sight-see along the way. The innovative research tool was inspired by Dr. Sylvia Earle, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and chair of the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. scientists making contributions were Dr. Wes Tunnell, Dr. Ian MacDonald and Dr. Tom Shirley.

 
Homecoming Parade Homecoming Parade Highlights Week's Events
The annual Homecoming Parade through downtown Corpus Christi Saturday, Feb. 7, was one of many highlights during a week of activities celebrating the 2009 Homecoming at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Decorated floats led the way to the American Bank Center where the Islander women’s basketball team defeated Nicholls State in a match-up of Southland Conference rivals.
 
Awards, Honors, and Grants
 
Richard HaswellRichard Haswell, Emeritus professor of English, was honored for the publication of his essay “Complexities of Responding to Student Writing” Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the University Center. The reception was hosted by the Department of English and W.W. Norton & Company which each year publishes 400 hardcover and paperback books.
 

Graduate Studies and Research reports that awards so far in fiscal year 2009 have surpassed $11 million. January awards were:

  • Dr. Gary Jeffress received $33,170 from the Texas Water Development Board for Near-Shore and Lower Coast salinity monitoring.
  • Dr. Paul Montagna received $60,000 from the Lower Colorado River Authority to study Colorado River Flow Relationships to Matagorda Bay Health Evaluation: Benthic Indicators.
  • Dr. Philippe Tissot received $47,720 from Cooner and Associates to study the Tidal or Non-tidal Nature for Florida Keys Shallow Water Stations.
  • Deidre Williams received $40,000 from the Army Corps of Engineers for Monitoring, Analysis and GIS Interpretation of Hydrodynamic and Sediment.

Alumni Jazz Mixer
Around 90 guests attended the Corpus Christi Area Islander Alumni Club’s second winter jazz mixer Thursday, Feb. 5, at Desiree’s by the Bay located inside the Art Center of Corpus Christi. Guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and dancing to live music by Groovin' High, a five-piece combo of Islander alumni and students.

Heeyeol Park and Jin-Suk Kim, two Korean teachers
A reception was held by the College of Education for Heeyeol Park and Jin-Suk Kim, two Korean teachers visiting the United States as part of the Fulbright Educational Program, Thursday, Feb. 12. The teachers visited the Corpus Christi school district as part of their studies of the American educational system.

A&M-Corpus Christi web
The University Web site earned a Gold Award in the 24th annual Admissions Advertising Awards competition hosted by Admissions Marketing Report, considered the nation’s leading marketing publication for higher education. Awards were given to entrants whose programs and materials display exceptional quality, creativity and message effectiveness.

College of Education Spring Pinning Ceremony
The College of Education welcomed students into the Teacher Education Program during the Spring Pinning Ceremony Sunday, Feb. 22, in the Performing Arts Center. During the ceremony to recognize future teachers who are beginning their field work in the classroom, honorees are presented with a teacher pin bearing the College of Education lighthouse.
