What is a Website?

A website is a collection of webpages that are all connected in one way or another via a system of links. Websites serve many purposes. Some websites disseminate information on a certain subject, other provide news reports, and yet others act as virtual businesses with goods and services to sell. Uses for websites an be infinite. They are limited only be your imagination.

How can Storyboarding a Site Help Me?

After you have set up the original website folder, you might wish to storyboard your site. This will help you how to organize your content in a manner that best fits the way you wish to present it. Storyboarding helps you decide how you will navigate your visitors through site content.

Storyboarding A Website in the Site Window

  1. Go to the Site Panel and single-click the Expand/Collapse icon to expand the Site Window
    1. Single-click on the Site Map icon and select Map and Files
    2. Go to the Files pane on the right and select the home directory which is the first folder at the top. If it has a plus sign to the left of it, single-click on it to open the folder. The plus sign will change to a minus sign to indicate that the folder is open.
    3. Right-click to get the contextual menu
    4. Select New File or New Folder whichever is desired
    5. Name this file or folder
    6. Repeat as often as necessary.Note: Folders will hold files that relate to major content areas. Files are the individual webpages that pertain to that content. If you create folders then right-click on them to put files within them.
    7. Right-click on the file that will be your homepage and select Set as Homepage. This is the entry page to your website. The homepage is often called index.htm or index.html. TAMUCC uses this nomenclature for naming the homepage. It provides you with certain permissions that allow the visitor to type in your website address and get to the homepage without having to know the actual file name.
  2. Go the the Map site of the Site window. It is located on the left. You will see a map of all the files within each folder. Your homepage will be the top file in this diagram.
    1. Locate the Link Pointer to that is located to the right of the file name.
    2. Single-click and hold on the Link Pointer
    3. Drag the Link Pointer to the File Pane and locate the file that you want to link to. This file will now appear in.
    4. Repeat this process for all the files that you want to link to.
